Sea Level came out of a long stretch of looking at water at dusk, when the horizon stops being a line and becomes a kind of pressure. I worked the lower half in restless greens and scumbled whites so the surface seems to churn just below the eye, while the dark band above holds everything still. The small bright marks are boats, or memories of boats — I was never quite sure. It is a quiet painting that I hope rewards a slow, standing kind of attention.
